Regency & Sustainability
At Regency, we recognize the delicate relationship between industry and environment. We are committed to protecting the ecological landscape for a green today and a better tomorrow. We’ve built environmental consideration into every part of our company; from product design to communications. We are proud of the significant progress we have made so far and we are continuously working to improve Regency’s green scorecard, here are a few of our steps towards sustainability.
All Regency wood products are clean burning and EPA certified to meet the strictest of air quality standards. Burning wood is carbon neutral. As trees grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, when they die and are left to decompose in the forest or burn in forest fires, the carbon stored in the trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Burning firewood produces the same amount of carbon dioxide as it has absorbed during its life cycle. All of our wood products have been designed with a two stage burn system that is so complete that it just leaves a little white ash at the bottom. This burn system means virtually no smoke is produced and as little as 4 grams per hour of smoke particles go up the chimney versus 150-200 grams of smoke per hour in an open masonry fireplace.
Open masonry fireplaces and vent free units produce excess smoke that compromises the air quality of your home and local environment. Regency builds highly efficient direct vent gas fireplace products that do not diminish surrounding air quality or produce wasted heat. The high efficiency of these units eliminates the waste caused by open and vent free units. Regency’s airtight fireboxes vent cleanly, without affecting indoor air and heat the rooms you spend the most time in.
Regency’s green commitment also means that we abolish waste in production. This is not only physical waste, but we try to eliminate all unneeded processes, effort and inventory. Over-manufacturing and extra steps use unnecessary energy and emit excess pollution. At Regency, we employ lean manufacturing methods called EXCITE™* (modeled after the Toyota Production System) to create efficient work flows. This results in less work space needed, high quality production, less time to produce our units and a better use of materials. We are constantly analyzing our production methods to create the most efficient, greenest workflow possible.
*EXCITE™ is Regency’s internal Training and Accreditation program adapted from the Toyota Problem Solving Method focusing on tools designed to give each and every Regency team member the ability to solve problems that result in the best possible product and service for all customers.
One Regency, One Tree - For every Regency sold, we plant a tree. Why plant trees? Trees keep our planet cool and our air clean. They take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen: the more there are, the less carbon dioxide there is, reducing global warming. Working with American Forests, the trees planted across North America offset carbon emissions and take one more step to restore nature's balance. An industry first, Regency has planted tens of thousands of trees globally in areas damaged by natural and human causes.
All consumer advertising flyers since January 2008 (used by our dealer network) are printed on 90-100% recycled paper. We print approximately ten million flyers annually. Using recycled paper saves over 1,800 trees from being deforested and prevents over 370,000 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions from being produced every year.
Our brochures are printed on paper secured from proper forest management materials and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the FSC label are certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Regency strives to be a zero waste facility; we recycle a number of goods in our offices and manufacturing plants. Annually, we recycle and reuse many materials, such as:
- Steel (coated, uncoated and aluminum)
- Steel dust
- Cans and bottles (glass, plastic and metal)
These items are reprocessed and reused, preventing them from ending up in landfills.
We also package all our products in biodegradable foam bags that mold to each product we box, rather than using Styrofoam or packing peanuts. This creates tight, versatile packaging that is safe for the environment.
Regency maintains a close relationship with its dealer network, and has brought its regular communications to the digital era. We no longer send weekly faxes and/or printed mail to our retailers; we relay messages via email and dealer websites. Digital communications save an immeasurable amount of paper from being used and ending up in waste.
