Out of an abundance of caution Fireplace Products Australia (FPA) is notifying owners of Regency brand i31 and natural gas F38 and FG38 open flue gas heaters of a safety hazard in which, under certain circumstances, potentially hazardous levels carbon monoxide may be created. This announcement is being made in conjunction with Energy Safe Victoria (ESV), the Victorian gas safety regulator. Affected units include:
- Regency LPG and natural gas i31 units sold between 2010 and 2018
- Regency natural gas F38 and FG38 open flue gas heaters units sold between 2003 and 2018
- Regency natural gas FG38 units sold between 2004 and 2018
- Masport branded F38 units sold between 2003 and 2006.
- Masport branded FG38 units sold between 2004 and 2006.
Regency is asking owners of these units to turn heaters off and register them for a free in-home modification and safety testing to be performed by a qualified gasfitter. If you have one of these heaters, you should not use it until it has been modified and tested by a qualified gasfitter.
In the meantime, please use alternative sources of heating. DO NOT bring outdoor gas appliances inside, such as a patio heater. This is dangerous and can also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

What’s the Risk?
Recent testing suggests that, under certain conditions, it may be possible for Regency brand i31, natural gas F38 and FG38 open flue gas heaters to release hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. This risk may be increased if the heater is subjected to certain conditions, including flue blockage, the operation of range hoods and other exhaust fans, a tightly sealed environment and/or if the heater has not been installed or serviced properly. No injuries have been reported and no other products manufactured by Regency are impacted.
What’s the Solution?
FPA will arrange for a licensed gas fitter to perform an inspection and modification to your unit at our cost. Modifications have been identified to correct and bring these units into compliance with the new regulations. FPA is confident that with the modification and results from the pressure testing of your home, your Regency heater will be safe to use for many years to come.
